Charles Ghankay Taylor, the former President of Liberia, was indicted under seal on 7 March 2003 while in office. The indictment was announced on 4 June 2003 on his first trip outside of Liberia. In August 2003 Taylor resigned as president and went into exile in Nigeria. He was transferred to the Special Court for Sierra Leone on 29 March 2006.
